Why Take a Feminist and Decolonial Approach to Illustration Education?
– Rotterdam Illustration Festival

locatie: Roodkapje

Hayfaa Chalabi is an illustrator and educator interested in the role of illustration to re-contextualise narratives, histories, and discussions. Her work revolves around the intersections of visual culture, gender, and migration.

Chalabi’s feminist and decolonial approach to educating illustration refuses to look at the two disciplines as neutral, and/or non-political and aims to invite students to explore illustration beyond narrow norms of western visual communication. Currently, Chalabi works as a senior lecturer and coordinator at the University of Arts in London (UAL).

Rotterdam Illustration Festival
The Rotterdam Illustration Festival is an initiative of Carmen José, Michael van Kekem, and Rachel Sender. They’re illustrators and educators. This festival is a response to the feedback they’ve heard loud and clear: illustrators want to feel more connected and less alone in the freelance world. We believe that by coming together, whether it’s to learn, share, or discuss, we can all grow together. That’s why the festival is all about gatebreaking; tearing down walls and opening doors, instead of gatekeeping.

This is your space to meet like-minded creatives, swap stories, and find inspiration.
